The Ilwoo Art Awards

  • The Ilwoo Art Awards was established as part of Hanjin Group's culture and arts support project to discover and foster passionate artists in all fields of art who use photography as a tool.

  • The name of this awards follows the nom de plume of former Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Yang-ho.

  • The Ilwoo Photography Awards will be a strong steppingstone for photographers with outstanding talent and passion to grow into world-class professional photographers.

The Ilwoo Foundation, established by the Hanjin Group, is unveiling the Ilwoo Art Prize in 2024.

From 2009 to 2022, the foundation successfully hosted thirteen cycles of the Ilwoo Photography Award, paying homage to the late Chairman Yang-ho Cho, known by his pen name Ilwoo. This award recognized and celebrated the achievements of 36 talented photographers across various photography disciplines.

This new initiative aims to foster artistic creation by expanding beyond photography to embrace any artistic medium incorporating photography in the creative process.

Each year, one recipient will be selected to receive a cash prize of 30,000,000 Korean won, dispersed in two installments. The first half, 15,000,000 Korean won, will be awarded in the first year, with the remaining to follow in the subsequent year. Alongside this cash prize, the recipient will also be awarded a matching amount of 30,000,000 Korean won in Korean air travel vouchers. The vouchers will be valid for five years, providing crucial support for the recipient¡¯s artistic endeavors.

Moreover, the recipient will have the opportunity to showcase their new work in the Ilwoo Space in the fall of the year following the award.

The Ilwoo Art Award will accept applications through an open call submission process. Artists working in any medium may submit their portfolios along with proposals for a new artwork or an expansion of an existing body of work that incorporates photography into the creative process. Submissions will be accepted between April 1 and 23, 2024 via the Ilwoo Art Award website at ilwoophoto.org.

Upon submission, portfolios and proposals will undergo thorough evaluation by our esteemed panel of judges. Shortlisted artists will be then invited for an in-person interview with the judges, scheduled for early May. From these interviews, one artist will be selected as the recipient of the award.

Please be advised that all decisions made by the judges are final.
